Our Haptic-Enhanced White Cane

The haptic-enhanced cane is not a replacement for the traditional white cane—it is an extension of it. Forward-facing sensors provide gentle vibrotactile feedback before obstacles are reached, giving users more time to react while reducing arm fatigue and repeated impacts. By effectively extending the cane’s reach, the system helps users move more comfortably and confidently through crowded or unfamiliar environments while preserving the trusted techniques of traditional cane travel.

Charitable Outreach

We have donated Haptic Enhanced White Canes to,  the School Association for Special Education of DuPage County, and the orientation and mobility Instructors at Northern Illinois University, among others.  Our charitable project is made possible through the dedicated work of our Lake Forest College research students, and the generous support of our donors.

Your donation will help us continue to provide Haptic Enhanced White Canes to the blind / low vision community.

Support the continued development and distribution of our haptic-enhanced mobility canes for blind and low-vision users.

Every $150 we raise buys the materials for one more cane.

When you contribute, every dollar goes directly to the work. Donations are made through Lake Forest College — that’s what makes your donation tax-deductible — and it is placed into a dedicated research account for the Haptics (Prete) Lab. None of it is used for administrative salaries or overhead. It goes into parts, sensors, motors, batteries, handles — the actual materials that become canes.

Thank you...
